Zamboanga, city in the southern Philippines, at the southwestern extremity of the Zamboanga Peninsula on the west coast of Mindanao Island. The city occupies a slender coastal strip backed by mountains. A seaport city, Zamboanga is a trading center and shipping point for a region that produces copra, hemp, timber, pearls, rubber, and marine products. The name Zamboanga is derived from the Malay word jambangan, which means “place of flowers”—a reference to the orchids and other exotic plant life proliferating in the area. The white-sand beaches and moderate climate of Zamboanga make it a popular tourist destination. For more information about Zamboanga click on the Image/menu below. |
